NITELITE TURNS 2

It was the second Wednesday midnight of June 96, when, as usual, I was having my insomnia attacks. I turned on the TV, we didn't have cable, so, there were no good shows left to watch. Then, I tried re-reading a book but I got bored. Tried making some envelopes but I couldn't find my materials at that time. Then finally, I decided to turn on the radio to the frequency 103.5 and heard voices talking on the air, and I asked myself, "is this K-lite? it couldn't be." They hardly talk there except for the show Twisted (the key to my discovering K-lite) I checked the frequency again and I wasn't wrong, it was 103.5 and yes they were really talking or more so, they were having a conversation--on the air. So, I paid attention and found out that they were having a show called Nitelite, wherein you beep them your name (false or real!), phone number (must be real!) and the topic you wanna talk about, then they call you if your topic is interesting enough. During those days, I wasn't a heavy K-lite listener, I only listen whenever Twisted was on, so I wasn't really familiar with the dj's voices (nowadays, I can tell who's who even in my sleep!) except for Little David who co-hosts Twisted with Jessica Zafra. After Nitelite, I learned that the voices belong to Monica, Jinji & Martin Gill. I couldn't really remember what the topics were at that time but I got interested in hearing other people talk about stuffs on the radio and letting other people in it.
I was looking forward for the next Wednesday midnight to come and be able to listen for more Nitelite. Then came Wednesday midnight, and I was surprised that Little David was the main man of the show together with Monica, but nowadays, Blade is in the cast, as well as the Ming Dynasty (listen to Nitelite to know about it!). As Wednesdays go by, I tried to be a faithful listener, I guess, so far, I must have missed 2 or 3 shows. (sleeping got in the way!) Week after another week, I got familiar with the hosts (actually, as well as the other jocks, coz the Nitelite trio talk about them or imitate their voices from time to time, especially Don Henry's) like Little David is considered as a father figure for the good advices he gives, Monica is considered as the singing Jennifer Aniston? (well, to be honest, I was a bit irritated---in a good way---when she first belt out "may tomorrow be a perfect day..." but now, Nitelite wouldn't be Nitelite without her singing. I don't know if the other listeners feel the same way too, but without Monica, Nitelite just isn't the same, even Little David said it so one time. And there's Blade who can really do a good kermit imitation. (BTW, he's not Jimmy Ray?! Maybe a long lost twin! Just kidding!)
The topics got deeper, weirder, funnier and more serious as Wednesdays go by, from a person thinking that she's a vampire to relationships (which by far, the most talked about topic) to people getting abused by their significant others (that term, I got from K-lite) to coping up with death to a fish who ate a ring to date rape to TV programs/movies to a noisy neighbor to religion and to whatever it is that's under the sun. (And I thought I have BIG problems, compared to them, my problem is just a fraction, made me really be grateful for what I have and for the people around me.)
All of the topics were special in their own way. Of course, there are times that some callers really make you wanna scream and say "get off the air!" But that's Nitelite! Always expect the unexpected. What makes Nitelite a BIG hit? Well, I think, it is easier to talk to people who you don't know personally. Talking to strangers about certain things are much more easier and you don't even have to give your real name (if you really don't want to) and you can even speak the language you are comfortable with. Hearing the hosts talk in tagalog is kinda funny in a way, it only proves that dj's from K-lite are down-to-earth?! (yeah!) and to quote Monica, "patayin mo siya!!!" always makes me smile whenever she say that phrase! In other words, there's no pressure involved. Talk as long as you want (well...not really as LONG as you want) at least as long as you've said your piece, don't talk in circles, that will surely irritate the hosts, as well as the listeners (the show is only for 2 hours, you know?!).
The Nitelite gang give advices without discriminating the callers, they say what they feel about your topic. If they feel that you're doing something wrong or being a jerk, they tell it to you. And the listeners give their take on your dilemma as well. Listeners who have experienced it before tries to make other listeners feel better just by saying "you'll get by" "you'll make it" "we'll pray for you" in other words, you're not alone out there and people do care, even people you don't know personally.
Let's not forget about those TV themes they play in between callers, makes you reminisce growing up. And Simone (the regulars will surely remember her, with that husky/sexy voice, who could forget?!) and her crush on dj Joshua, where is she now? Some listeners like her, some don't! There even came a point that she became a part of Nitelite.
For 2 years now, (without a sponsor, well, they had one but it didn't really last...)---Monica, Little David & Blade---have been on the air every Wednesday midnights to listen to our topics, to play our TV themes, to laugh with us, to symphatize with us, to encourage us, to sing for us (well Little David should try it one time!) and to pray for us. Most of the listeners complain about Nitelite being not long enough, well yeah, I'm guilty of that too, but let's remember 2 hours is 7200 seconds (I think?!) so, it's a long time. In wishing the show to be longer, why don't we just be grateful that there's Nitelite at all. (I know I am!) Too much of anything is not good for you, remember that! So, when the clock strikes 12 midnight every Wednesdays, be sure you are locked in to Nitelite, alright? Don't be left out! To the Nitelite trio---Monica, Little David & Blade, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for making our Wednesday midnights a fun and lesson filled one. Hope you could stay on the air as long as you can. HAPPY 2ND YEAR ANNIVERSARY & more to come.

AN EVENT TO REMEMBER

Last May 8, a windy Friday night at the Greenhills Shopping Center Carpark, around 9 pm, the first ever drive-in movie became a reality, thanks to K-lite. It was a treat. I had fun. I mean, everything was for FREE, so, how can you not have fun? First, the car pass, then the drinks, the hotdog sandwiches, the Ice Creams (my nieces surely enjoyed it a whole lot!) the stickers, then the raffle. (congratulations to those who've won, we got lucky and got a metallic blue bag!)
It got delayed for a while, so what? It's better than waiting in a traffic jam. The screen was a bit low and a bit dark, so what? Aren't some movie houses the same? Some cars left the venue in the middle of the movie, so what? I guess, they didn't read the other side of the car pass huh? Little David's voice interrupted the audio a few times to announce what's goin' on, so what? The local TV stations do it all the time, especially when our fave shows are on. The stickers they gave were the wrong ones, so what? They did gave the correct ones afterwards. So what? (pardon me for saying that a whole lot, I just saw the movie S.F.W. recently) But let's think of what the K-lite crew and staff went through just to make the drive-in movie a reality. So much more, combined to all the people who were there. Let's not emphasize on the few little glitches of the event, look on the bright side. How many people have experienced a drive-in movie here in Manila? Well? At least you could say, you're one of them, right? I mean, I didn't enjoy the movie for I've seen it already and I don't really fancy action flicks but I had fun coz of the experience and the FREE stuffs. (and I was able to give out newsletters as well!)
I guess, a perfect drive-in movie would be a romantic comedy or a musical like GREASE maybe, not those tearjerkers, not those heavily charged movie, a movie most people would like. Do I hear someone saying TITANIC? (yeah, my niece Sunflower!) Well, all in all, the event was a success for a first of its kind, and I'm sure if there'll be a next drive-in movie, it'll be much more fun and more exciting and bigger raffle prizes. (maybe a PC???) Some wishes do come true you know?! If you weren't able to be a part of the first drive-in movie ever, be sure to be on the next one. I'm hoping. Let's hope together.

CDs OF ANGELS

Last May 19, K-lite premiered the movie CITY OF ANGELS in line with the movie, they gave out soundtracks (in CD format mind you?!) thru their various talkshows. What a treat it was! I mean, the number of participants suddenly tripled than their usual share of responses either via the voice box, telephone, pager, and even the fax machine became a frequent channel for most of the talkshows. Were you one of those who responded coz you'll gonna get something in return? Well, I guess, I couldn't blame you coz CDs are not cheap. (I only collect cassettes--the CDs I have except for one all came from K-lite!)
GIRLTALK was the first show to give out CDs, their question on that particular day was "what's the angelic quality of a man?" (or your man? whichever tha case may be) I was asleep at that time, so, I wasn't able to participate, either way I'm sure I wouldn't get a chance coz I hardly participate interactively on K-lite's talkshows. I just listen most of the time. (that's where I get my so-called stories?!) The next GIRLTALK question was "what would you give up for love?" Well, this time I did participate via the pager, that's as far as I can go, too bad their K-lite Cafe is not working right now, I used to log on for TALKBACK almost every show!) and this may sound lame but I would give up K-lite for the L word.(yeah right!) But thank GOD I really don't have to coz it will surely make my life miserable! (WOW! that's rather deep!) Well...that's how heavily inclined I am towards K-lite. They got me in so deep I can't seem to find a way out! But why go out when "in" is not hurting me, right? Does listening to K-lite hurt you? (doubtful!) It even helps me get through a day's work!
Then all of a sudden on that particular Wednesday midnight the insomniacs out there all wanted to be on NITELITE all because of the CDs (of course!) but I would have to say that the topics were rather interesting in their own way, the most memorable one was the caller named Jay with his friend Jerry (they both got a CD!) there even came a point wherein they also won on GIRLTALK & TALKBACK lucky guys and I say ditto when they said that K-lite Rules!
I guess, the listeners really paid attention when Little David announced that most of the talkshows will have a CD giveaway coz it was really hard getting through TWISTED that Sunday afternoon, but I did get lucky, again, I only get lucky on K-lite. My lucky question was the character Nicolas Cage played in CON-AIR? and my thanks to Blade on this one coz he asked it on one of his contest, it really pays to listen, in my case, I got myself a CD! (so next time, listen, it will surely be rewarding in the future!)
TALKBACK was the last show to give out the soundtracks, so, I guess, this was the last straw for most of the listeners who weren't that lucky during the other talkshows. The first night, the question was "do you believe in angels? why/why not?" I do believe in angels. I even wrote down my response but I chickened out in responding thru all the channels available! I really missed the cafe! I just don't like being on the air! I'm not comfortable getting on the air! But I did experienced being on the air, once, on NITELITE where I talked about a survey which unfortunately, I wasn't able to accomplished. Next TALKBACK night, the question was "would you accept an instant pass to heaven provided that you become an angel, or would you rather live a full mortal life taking a chance on whether or not you'll get a place in heaven when you die?" (whew, that was a mouthful!) I wasn't able to listen coz I went to the advance screening of the said movie. I had to be there. I had a mission not so impossible...distributing more newsletters! But nonetheless, I choose the latter part. Well, if you didn't get lucky on the talkshows, they did gave out 20 more CDs during the screening. Did you get lucky? (I hope so!)
The movie was good! We liked it! Great soundtrack! Loud people in front of us! My sister got a kick out of seeing Anthony Suntay! My cousin wanted to kick some people in front of us! A lotta FREEBIES were given out! The theater was packed, some people were even standing up! Some people saved seats! Total bummer! Shouldn't it be a first come, first served basis? Besides, we all got the tickets for FREE! I guess, Fairness wasn't a part of the game at that time, huh?! Those unfair people? ANGELS? They're not!!!

JUNE VALENTINE ON K-LITE

June is not the month of hearts but on K-lite it will be. Our right kind of lite will have a diamond/filmfest of some sorts. Every Thursdays, starting on the 28th of May, they'll have a re-screening of 4 romantic love stories---recent and not so recent movies alike. On every movie screening they'll give out a diamond courtesy of DeBeers. (the only beer that won't give you a hangover!) Sounds good? Well, of course, if it's from K-lite it must be good! (Oooops! Sounds familiar?!) Let's change the good to great! (Sounds better?!) The movies included in the diamond filmfest are the following: CITY OF ANGELS on May 28 with Nicolas Cage & Meg Ryan. LOVE AFFAIR on June 04 with Warren Beatty(did I spell that right?!) & Anneth Bening (that too?). JERRY MAGUIRE on June 11 with Tom Cruise & Renee Zellwegger. (I think I spelled that correctly!) MY BESTFRIEND'S WEDDING on June 18 with Julia Roberts & Dermot Mulroney. To get a chance to win a DeBeers diamond, all you have to do is tune in to K-lite and join the promo. Be the right number caller, answer 2 easy questions, one is about the movies & the other about the symbol of eternal love. Easy huh? Well, I'm hoping to be there. For a chance to get a diamond and to give out this newsletter.

TWISTED TURNED 2 (and I FORGOT ABOUT IT!)

Twisted's anniversary came and go! And I can't still believe that I forgot about it! I mean, it is also my anniversary in listening to the right kind of lite. (Happy Anniversary to me!) I know, it's not as BIG a deal as it sounds, but to me, it is. Without Twisted there'll be no K-lite for me. Well...as late as it is, still, HAPPY BELATED 2ND YEAR ANNIVERSARY to the Twisted hosts --- Jessica Zafra & Little David & Cookie! More years to come.
Last month, being Twisted's anniversary a lot of guests came on the show plus some live acts here and there. The first Sunday, Lampano Alley gave us a taste of what blues music is all about. I'm no expert on the said type of music but I liked what I've heard. Pleasant to the ears. Relaxing. Soothing. Especially on a lazy & sleepy Sunday afternoon. It was fun. (at least for me!)
The second week, Radioactive Sago came on the show for the second time, and I was really disappointed coz I wasn't able to listen. I fell asleep! The first time that they came month's ago, I also missed them! (#&*@!##) Sleeping is really getting in the way on my listening to Twisted. But that's life. My life. Sleeping is a must. Besides, there'll be a next time! (I just hope I'm awake when that next time came!)
For me, the third week was the most memorable one because they gave out CD soundtracks of CITY OF ANGELS and I was lucky enough to get one! They also had a person who did arias! I don't like his kind of music but he was okay! (I guess...)
On the fourth week, finally Jimmy Ray, I mean, Blade came on the show even just for a few minutes. And well, I still don't know where they get the idea that he's gay. I guess, some people took the teasings on NITELITE a little too seriously. Don't believe everything you hear on the air! (I hear a lot of things on the air but I try to remember the only the good ones!!!)
The final anniversary episode, well....can't say much coz I fell asleep once again! I guess, that's the way it's gonna be for the coming Sundays. Misses & Hits. Or I could just sleep at work, so, I will be up and about when Twisted's on! Well...I'll see what I can do. It's not the right thing to sleep on the job but I'm sure I'm not alone on this one!!!

AEON'S WAY

Well, here I am again with the second offering of my so-called newsletter. I met my target of 100 copies with the first one. Still unofficial. But the K-lite people know who Aeonflux (that would be me!) is. One of them blew my cover. Well, it wasn't actually her fault, it was the fax machine that I used that really gave away my identity. So much for trying to be anonymous huh? I wanted to be unknown coz they already know me, in a way. I love mystery, that's why I was trying to be one. There's this feeling when a person you don't know do something for you, right?! I don't mean the feeling of being scared from a stalker! It's a positive feeling I'm talking about. Like, for instance, if you have a secret admirer who sends you little notes & what nots, you tend to get excited and all, right? I'm not saying that the feelings of the K-lite people are the same, but this I know, they're grateful for the newsletter, they told me so. I have to believe them coz they gave me a CD. (No! I believe them, with or without a CD!) Of course, they didn't have to give me one but who am I to resist from a compact disc? And most of all, I'm glad coz if they hated it, well, no need to continue on, right?! The reactions of some of the listeners who were able to get hold of the first newsletter were positive, I think?! (Well, it's enough for me!) It was really a challenge on my part to distribute the newsletters coz I was born a "shy" person! (I can see eyebrows reaching up the sky!) Doing this is my confidence booster. I have to admit, it is self-fulfilling in a way. Of course, in making the first one possible, my partners in crime helped me. Actually, they're my cousin---Sailor Moom, my nephew---Beavis & my niece---Sunflower! Now, I started liking the idea of me being a bit older than them. Actually, they get more excited than I do sometimes, especially in giving out the newsletter. I'm not taking advantage of them, I don't do that. They actually volunteered and of course I had to feed them! (that's the catch!) KIDS! They're actually listening to K-lite nowadays, well, at least whenever I'm with them playing games on their playstation, K-lite is our background. I guess, they still can't relate to most of the songs being played on K-lite. They were looking for Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Hanson and the like. I don't blame them, their ages range from 10 to 13!
This ish have more visuals. Some of them I got from the net. I really wish you could see the colored version of this. (even if I have BAD, really bad color coordination!) Well, don't worry, if I get to be like RICHie, it'll be in full color. That's a promise. And that's "IF" I become one heck of a zillionaire. (who knows?) I wanted to put the picture of one of the jocks, she said no, but of course, I call the shots here, so I will, but I guess, now is not the right time. I'll torture her some other time. (hehehe!) That's for blowing off my cover. (I'm kidding!) For now, settle for Enrique Martin Morales! (I just had to put him in here!)
How do I get my stories? (you might wanna know?) Well, it all depends on K-lite. The second week of May, I only had the NITELITE & Drive-in stories but during the last few weeks of May, the diamond story came up. And last was the Twisted story! Which happens to be my anniversary in listening to K-lite, 2 years now, and I forgot about it during the first newsletter. How? I don't know! Forgetting a thing like that? (Man, I'm getting old!)
What'll be in the next month's ish or the next, well, as I've said, it all depends on what's gonna happen on K-lite. If nothing's shakin' up (which I doubt!) then there's no K-lite Buzz! My cousin asked me why I made the Buzz for K-lite? She also asked me what's in it for me? Well, I told her that I just did it! I mean, at that very moment I was by myself just tinkering with their computer, then, I stumbled upon this program, and everything just came together. It wasn't planned. I never thoght that I could pull off something like this! The first title I came up with was K-LITE CALENDAR then, I put a section on K-lite's calendar, so, I had to change it. I guess, the word buzz just started buzzing in my head. I do that all the time, buzz, I mean, if you watch E! Coming Attractions, there's a segment called movie buzzzzz break so, I copied it, so, sue me! (no! I'm kidding about the suing part!) And what do I get from all these? (aside from tired fingers? just kidding!) Well, it may sound a bit off but this thing I'm doing? Adds to my confidence. K-lite Buzz is my confidence booster. And I just love writing eventhough I'm sure and I'm aware that I won't ever make money from it. Never Ever! (hey! that's a song!) This is basically, like a letter, (a long one) for you, whoever you are. It came from my heart! (yeah right! getting serious now am I?) BTW, if you want the first one of this newsletter just let me know, okay? e-mail me at
marcy76@usa.net or just buzz or something. I'll find a way. Even if I have to send it to you via snail mail, I will! (well, that would be too much but why not?!) And again my THANKS to those who gave time in reading the first newsletter and to those reading this one right now. THANK YOU! I enjoyed doing this, (don't tell my boss that I wrote this whenever I felt lazy doing my job at the office!) sure hope you enjoyed reading it too! Till then! THANKS AGAIN!
